Pattern Development Seminar
February 6 – 8, 2007

[TC]²’s  Pattern Development seminar receives a great deal of interest and enjoys high attendance.  The instructor, Elizabeth White, is dedicated to providing a comprehensive understanding and solid hands-on experience for the participants.  Elizabeth reviews technological developments and continually broadens the course content to include these innovations.

Some participant comments include:

The best part of attending the Pattern Development seminar is…

Exposure to pattern techniques I had never learned, hands-on examples, and what technology is coming out for new techniques.

Being able to see new ways for pattern making and marker making.

The environment, type of participants, the teacher, the one-on-one training, and the group wasn’t too big.

Elizabeth White shares:  “The course is designed for beginning patternmakers and others who need to understand basic patternmaking theory and techniques.  Flat pattern and drafting exercises comprise the majority of seminar time.

Preparation for this seminar involves learning about each participant’s background and goals for attending the course.  I incorporate examples that participants bring with them and adjust topic content based on prior evaluations and attendee goals.”

The Institute of Lifestyle & Weight Management

By Kim Anderson, Ph.D., [TC]²

After seeing family, friends and patients struggle with obesity and realizing there was a scarcity of help for the condition, Dr. William Wilkins, a physician specializing in Family Practice Medicine, founded The Institute of Lifestyle & Weight Management (ILWM). The ILWM, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, is dedicated to assisting members in the often mercurial road to weight loss.

At the ILWM, a team of professionals not only help members lose weight, but help them keep it off. Marc Fusco, Vice President of the Institute, says that proper diet and exercise alone can be a difficult way to lose weight. They also offer emotional and psychological support. To further motivate members, the ILWM recently acquired a [TC]² NX-12 body scanner, for a trial period, as Fusco puts it —“a high tech cache that people like.”

The body scanner is used as a “feedback mechanism.” Fusco says that “folks don’t like to be measured with the tape.” The NX-12 scanner offers a hands-off approach. Members are scanned once a month, allowing them to see just how much their waist has shrunk. Fusco says the scanner has kept members excited about the weight loss process —“they feel they’re a part of something.”

Fusco and his colleagues are also utilizing the NX-12 scanner for research. Fusco explains that the scanner, having the ability to quickly collect precise measurements, is an excellent research tool. He says that today people are seen as either being obese or not. He and his colleagues believe the condition is more complex. They believe there are numerous factors associated with obesity. The collection of scanned data will allow them to study the condition closely.

After only nine months the ILWM has 200 members, two of which have lost 100 pounds each. With the addition of the NX-12 scanner, Fusco says members can now see exactly how their body is reconfiguring during the weight loss process.

SEAMS Fall Networking Conference

By Jim Lovejoy, [TC]²

During the SEAMS Association’s recent Fall Conference, Keith Crisco, CEO of Asheboro Elastic Corporation, hosted tours in three of his plants to show the attendees the latest in elastic knitting technology.  The tours started with Crisco giving a brief history of Asheboro Elastics.

Asheboro Elastics is a leader in the knitted elastics industry.  The company’s vision, service, and people have made Asheboro Elastics one of the fastest growing private companies in America. It supplies elastic to the underwear, athletic wear, home furnishings, pants, fleece, hosiery and industrial markets.

Since 1986 AEC’s production has risen steadily from 10 million yards to over 500 million yards annually. Tour participants saw the longest line of elastic knitting machines in the US, and were impressed with the variety of elastics being produced.

The Friday session ended with an evening Bar-B-Q/Bonfire at the Crisco farm, where Chef Jeff Crisco served a sumptuous meal in a great outdoor setting. The impromptu tour of the refurbished 1890’s farmhouse on the property was a special treat.

During the Saturday session, SEAMS members and guests listened to Bill Kernodle from Clemson Apparel Research give the latest update on government procurement which has had some ups and downs.

Plant Manager Sandy Shelton answers questions from Dean Allred and Tony Whitener of the Hosiery Technology Center.

Bill Kernode, Clemson Apparel Research

Dan St. Louis of the Hosiery Technology Center shared “lessons learned” during the joint venture at the August MAGIC Show where 16 companies shared a pavilion with the theme “You Wear US Well.” It was so successful that the group is going back for the February MAGIC Show with a larger presence.

In the member’s business meeting, five SEAMS Directors were elected. (see www.seams.org).

Saturday evening’s after-dinner speaker Daniel Hopping, President of Next Retail Group, delighted members with his view of technology in our lives — where it was, where it is, and where we are going.

Yuhan-Kimberly and The “Cool Zone” at SPESA Expo 2007
Hot Technologies Transforming the Industry

By Karen Davis, [TC]²

Can you imagine applying color to fabric that doesn’t need to be pre-treated or post-processed?  Attendees to SPESA Expo in Miami on
May 8-10 will be able to see how.  Yuhan-Kimberly DTP of South Korea will exhibit its recently developed nano-colorants for digital textile printing.  This will be the first public demonstration of these colorants in the Western Hemisphere.

Images will be designed, printed onto fabric, cut, sewn, and distributed in the “Cool Zone.”  Fabric will be printed on the Yuhan-Kimberly DTP printer and then heat-set before moving to Gerber’s 3500 cutting system without any additional fabric treatment requirements.  The assembly will take place using Rimoldi equipment.  Participants will be able to place an order for their own fashion shirt but will be unable to tell the difference in the hand of the fabric between the printed and unprinted areas.

Dr. Tim McCraw, General Manager of Yuhan-Kimberly’s Digital Textile Printing Business, comments, “The “Cool Zone” is an excellent venue from which Yuhan-Kimberly can demonstrate the capabilities of our new and unique inks and at the same time demonstrate how digital textile printing fits into the future digital supply chain. Yuhan-Kimberly is pleased to be a part of the “Cool Zone” at SPESA Expo 2007.”

The Yuhan-Kimberly exhibit is part of a 4,000 sq. ft. pavilion that [TC]² is coordinating.  It is the largest exhibit combining multiple suppliers, and will showcase leading edge technologies that are in support of a totally digital supply chain.  The space will be divided into four areas of concentration:  Product Development, Merchandising/Sales, Product Conversion, and Distribution.  In addition to the exhibits by more than ten different companies, there will be live presentations during show hours, describing the various technologies and pavilion activities in depth.

[TC]² is also coordinating a full slate of free educational seminars, including 18 offerings presented by [TC]² staff and invited speakers.  These sessions are being scheduled so as not conflict with other show events.  Plan to visit the Cool Zone, Pavilion 670, at the SPESA Expo,
May 8-10, at the Miami Convention Center.  For more information on SPESA Expo 2007, visit www.spesaexpo.com.

Yuhan-Kimberly, Ltd., the parent of Yuhan-Kimberly DTP, is a joint venture company established in 1971 between Kimberly-Clark Corporation in the USA and Yuhan-Corporation in South Korea. Yuhan-Kimberly is a leading health and hygiene company in South Korea.
