[TC]²® 3D Body Scanner Selected for SizeMX
(National Sizing Survey of Mexico)

Cary, NC – The 3D body measurement system developed by [TC]2 (Textile/Clothing Technology Corporation) has been selected for a comprehensive national survey of 6,600 men and women in Mexico in 2004. Later extensions are planned to bring the survey to 12,000 total subjects. This selection continues a trend of national sizing surveys served by [TC] 2 body scanning technology that began with SizeUK ( www.size.org ) in 2001, initiating the modern era of population sizing using 3D full body scanning combined with automatic size, shape, and measurement extraction. SizeUK was followed by SizeUSA, ( www.sizeUSA.com ) which kicked off in July 2002 and completed subject scanning in September 2003. Over 10,000 subjects participated in SizeUK and also in SizeUSA.

According to Dr. Lilia Prado-León of the Ergonomics Research Center at the University of Guadalajara and organizer of SizeMX, “reliable anthropometric data of our population will be a powerful tool for not only clothing applications, but for furniture and other products designed for consumer use. Previous studies and our own analysis shows that using 3D scanning technology is an accurate and time-efficient method of data collection. By measuring electronically, the survey data set is a dynamic set of information, which can be continually re-analyzed as new needs arise, making 3D body scanning the sizing survey technique of the future. [TC]2 software allows us to not only use measurements developed for SizeUK and SizeUSA, but to create new measurements specific to our own sponsors needs.”

The survey has been approved for funding by CONACYT, the National Counsel of Science and Technology ( http://www.conacyt.mx ). Its mission is to fortify the scientific development and technological modernization of Mexico, and to promote and support specific investigative projects. The SizeMx project is supported by trusts and the Federal Public Administration jointly with CONACYT.

Dr. David Bruner, Director of Technology Development at [TC]2 added, “We greatly appreciate this technology endorsement by SizeMX. We will be training their staff in November 2003 so they will be completely self-sufficient in executing their national sizing survey, as was done with SizeUK. We believe that having a common technology base for the national sizing surveys of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Mexico will be a beginning basis for international collaborations in population sizing studies in the future. To further enable this goal, [TC]2 is making its market-leading automated 3D data extraction software available for any national or international sizing survey, regardless of the scanning technology employed.”

[TC]²'s proprietary system uses completely safe white-light technology and non-moving scan heads to capture data points of an individual's image, and automatically extract accurate measurements. The private and automated scanning process takes only a matter of seconds to complete and [TC]2's size, shape, and measurement extraction software offers comprehensive data extraction functionality, allowing hundreds of user-customized measurements to be automatically extracted from the body scan. According to Dr. Bruner, “[TC]2's newly developed 3D-to-2D direct garment pattern creation technology from body scans is entering garment trials in fall 2003 and will provide even more valuable data output for apparel industry applications of national size survey data. Generating garment patterns without having the intermediate extraction and interpretation of measurements is proving to be the most comprehensive and accurate way to utilize body scan information for apparel applications.”

“This project will help make reality the vision of the Research Center for year 2006 by applying investigative procedures and technology to the important field of design. It will contribute to the Center's goal of providing the best educational options in the region and on a national scope, for the development of professionals in the areas of architecture, urbanism, design and the arts, as well as to fortify and to make the textile industry in our country more competitive,” concluded Dr. Prado-León.
