NC State College of Textiles Designs Warm-up Suits for Hoops for Hope
Why the College of Textiles is Involved
-
“The College of Textiles at NC State is proud to be involved in a game that raises awareness of breast cancer and celebrates the lives of survivors. Kay Yow is a symbol of NC State, the state of North Carolina, and the nation and to be able to be a part of an event to raise money and awareness of this disease is quite an honor,” says Dean Blanton Godfrey, Dean of the College of Textiles at NC State.
The Process
-
Coach Yow visited the College of Textiles to discuss with Dean Blanton Godfrey the need for fabric for a project that she was working on for Hoops for Hope. Dean Godfrey saw an opportunity to produce a special warm-up suit for the players and staff.
-
Coach Yow was very excited and overwhelmed that the College of Textiles wanted to be a part of this special event. “Everyone on the team and staff is so excited about this project and I am personally overwhelmed by the College of Textiles interest,” Coach Kay Yow.
-
Dean Godfrey enlisted the help of Dr. Cindy Istook, an associate professor at the College of Textiles, to lead a team to design these garments, which includes a warm-up suit and shooter shirt.
-
Dr. Cindy Istook led a team of 3 students to work on the project: Katie McCree, Amy Quinn, and Ho Sun Lim.
-
With inspiration from William Ivey Long, a 5 time Tony award winning Broadway costume designer and friend of the College and several textiles partners in North Carolina the warm-up suits were produced.
People and Companies Involved
-
Dr. Istook and the students used the new logo of the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund to inspire their design. The logo can be seen on the jacket and pants and of course pink was used throughout the garment. Tying the new logo to the garment was important to make people aware of the new cancer fund so that they can help support the fight against breast cancer.
-
Cotton Incorporated in Cary, NC donated 100% high-tech cotton fabric made with TransDRY™ technology developed by Cotton Incorporated. This fabric has never been used in a garment.
-
The moisture management technology allows 100% cotton fabrics to transfer perspiration away from the body to the outside of the fabric where it can dry faster. It is this performance that inspired the name for the technology that Cotton Incorporated is marketing as TransDry™ - meaning “transfers moisture, dries faster.”
-
The TransDry™ technology provides the team with the softness and comfort of cotton and a new level of moisture management performance that goes beyond man-made synthetic fibers that are usually used in these suits.
-
Textile Clothing/ Technology Corporation ([TC]² ) in Cary, NC spent countless hours working on the development of the print design using digital printing. The 12 garments they produced will be used for display purposes.
-
MJ Soffe, in Fayetteville, NC, cut, screen printed, and sewed the garments worn by coaches, players and staff at the Hoops for Hope game.
-
Teresa Jones, director of apparel development and manager of Intensity Athletic, MJ Soffe’s Team division brand worked on production of the warm-up suits with Dr. Cindy Istook and the students from the College of Textiles. The Intensity Athletic division provides practice and on-the-court basketball uniforms as well as uniforms for football, baseball, and softball.
