Our History
1979 -

Concept for [TC]² generated from a National Science Foundation study conducted by John T. Dunlop and Fred Abernathy of Harvard University


1981 -

Founded as the Tailored Clothing Technology Corporation to conduct R&D activities
Membership consisted of 13 enterprises, representing a cross-section of the soft goods chain
Department of Commerce contributed financial support which was matched by industry

 

1984 -

Number of industry participants grew from the original thirteen to over fifty

 

1985 -

Original mission expanded to include technology demonstration and education programs

 

1987 -

Formally endorsed by the American Apparel Manufacturers Association (now the American Apparel and Footwear Association, AAFA)

 

1988 -

Opened a "teaching factory" - the National Apparel Technology Center

 

1989 -

Began creating interactive, multimedia training programs

 

1994 -

Introduced Value-Added CoachingTM services to assist companies with the assessment and implementation of new business processes

 

1998 -

Has over 200 members and associate members
Made three-dimensional body measurement system commercially available

 

1999 -

Four 3D body measurement systems delivered (Levi Strauss & Co., San Francisco, CA, U.S. Navy, North Carolina State College of Textiles, and Clarity Fit Technologies of Minneapolis

 

2000 -

The Lands' End launches successful 14 city mobile scanning tour using [TC]²'s 3D body measurement system.

MindWorks Multimedia division spins off to form an employee-owned company

 

2001 -

[TC]² 3D body scanner selected for Size UK Study

First body scanning custom apparel application launched in a retail store at Brooks Brothers on Madison Avenue, New York City

AMTEX Demand Activated Manufacturing Architecture (DAMA) project is completed. Final reports are available at techexchange.com.

 

2002 -

[TC]² initiates SizeUSA, a U. S. National Sizing Survey to scan 10,000+ men and women across the U.S.

[TC]² hosts Bobbin Tech Conference at its facility, with 125 attendees, on December 10th.

[TC]² acquires techexchange.com, an online trade publication dedicated to technology for the sewn products industry.

 

2003 -

At its annual meeting of Members and Board of Directors, Peter Butenhoff was elected to serve as Chairman and CEO, Dr. Michael Fralix to serve as President and COO, and L.E. (Bo) Gibens, Chairman and CEO of Lucky Star Industries, to serve as Chairman, Compensation Committee.

[TC]² hosts Apparel Tech Conference at its facility on November 13, 2003.

[TC]² completes the data collection portion of SizeUSA, visiting 13 cities and scanning over 10,800 individuals

2004 -

[TC]²’s newest scanning technology, the NX-12, was launched. A record 23 scanners were sold during the year.

A 3D to 2D automatic pattern generation tool was developed.

The SizeUSA analysis and final report was published.

In conjunction with AATCC, a Digital Textile Printing Conference was held at [TC]² in October.

[TC]²’s bi-weekly newsletter, The Technology Communicator, was launched in September.

 

2005 -

[TC]² celebrated its 25th anniversary with an Open House following its Annual Meeting of Members and the Board of Directors in March.

Seated-pose scanning has been added to the 3D body measurement technology applications.

The first SizeUSA User’s Group meeting was held in June, and attended by 60+ industry representatives. Additional scans and an Access data base for data analysis was distributed.

Forty-four NX-12 3D body scanners were shipped, a significant increase over last year.

 

2006 -

The next generation scanner, the NX-16, was under development, with an unveiling scheduled for the first quarter of 2007.

Several proprietary shape analysis studies utilizing SizeUSA data were conducted for various brands.

[TC]² re-established its acclaimed student intern program with ten interns participating for an eight week program.

 

2007 -

The NX-16 3D Body Scanner exceeded projected sales goals for the year.

At the May SPESA Expo in Miami, [TC]² presented The Cool Zone, a 4,000 sq. ft. booth bringing together 15 vendors to showcase leading edge technologies.

[TC]² introduced a SizeUSA Automatic Search Tool to easily conduct data queries, and released the SizeUSA 3D scan images for purchase.

Six student interns completed the eight week summer program, bringing the total number of participants since the program’s inception to over one hundred

 

2008 -

The NX Series of [TC]² 3D body scanners reaches 150 installations.

A web site network of 3D body scanner installations, www.imagetwin.com, is launched.

After 15 years at its previous location, [TC]² relocates to 5651 Dillard Drive, Cary, NC 27518. The 22,000 sq. ft. facility incorporates conference room areas, a demonstration center and technology development labs, in addition to office space for the staff.

[TC]² earned accreditation through WRAP, the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production organization, to provide training and consulting services to factories seeking WRAP certification.

[TC]² introduced its 3D avatar creation capabilities, which are now part of the measurement extraction software package for each NX-16 3D body scanner.

 

2009 -

Virtual fashion application launched through the creation of personal avatars in the NX-16 body scanner 3D measurement extraction software

Development of the Haiti Apparel Center in Port au Prince to provide training for sewing operators and mechanics.

Launch of new www.tc2.com web site.

2010 -

[TC]² launched the second Cool Zone at SPESA Expo in Atlanta in May, with eleven vendors participating.

The LC-12 3D body scanner was introduced.

[TC]² became the sole distributor for the V-Dresser software, used to create 3D garments for virtual try-on.

The Haiti Apparel Center held its grand opening, following a five month delay due to the January earthquake. Operator training programs are well underway, and seminars for middle managers, supervisors, and an executive level program have also been conducted.

Size Mexico, a sizing survey to determine sizes and shapes of the Mexican population, was launched in August 2010 with Cámara Nacional de la Industria de la Industria del Vestido (CNIV), the Mexican Apparel Industry Association.
